Marco Cuevas

Marco Antonio Cuevas Cruz (1933–2009) was a Guatemalan civil engineer, urban planner, and academic who played a pivotal role in international territorial planning during the late 20th century. Educated at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala and through a Yale-affiliated urban planning program in Lima, Peru, Cuevas became Guatemala's first certified urban planner and later founded the Center for Urban and Regional Studies (CEUR). Between 1970 and 1994, he directed major urban planning and municipal infrastructure projects globally, leading the creation of foundational spatial development plans and notes for growing international cities, including Nairobi, Kenya. Outside of his urban design and academic legacy, he contributed to drafting Guatemala's 1986 Constitution and was a Pan American Games gold medalist in rowing.
